:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dr. No -- Fascinating : Informative and insightful on technology, artificial intelligence and where we might be headed. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Heady and Hopeful : A fantastic collection of essays about the evolution of humanity and technology (particularly biotech & AI/AGI). I was as thrilled by the depth of history and analysis as I was the overall perspective of technology actually improving the lives of ALL humanity, not just the wealthy and elite. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2022 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from benk -- disappointing : The good points of the book get diluted by the needless anti Trump agenda. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2021 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Saoirse -- Amazing idea, poorly executed. : I am such a fan of Jeanette Winterson - particularly how she explores questions of gender, time, and the body through a postmodern lens in her fiction. So, when I discovered that she had written a nonfiction book on technology and AI - I jumped at the chance to read her book. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Virtualrealist -- Such interesting essays! : 12 Bytes: How We Got Here. Where We Might Go Next by Jeanette Winterson is a collection of 12 essays on tech and AI. One of my favorite things about the whole book is how Winterson points out the oft overlooked contributions of women in the creation and evolution of technology. I could read about Ada Lovelace all day (and have!). I enjoy how she embraces technology while eschewing the way corporations may try to use it for their own interests and not necessarily for the good of humanity. Zone Three about sex and love in the time of AI is fascinating. I also had never really considered how Gnosticism might relate to these topics, but it makes total sense! A great read for those who want to do some deep-thinking about what technology means to us. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2022 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from mtchocura -- Disappointing, meandering, fragmented : Someone gave me this book. It reads like a tossed salad of random musings loosely woven around topics of AI and tech and society. From one paragraph to the next, you never know where it's going, and there doesn't seem to be a plan. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Janiasea -- An optimistic look ahead : Winterson discusses the evolution of tech, our world’s binaries, and our future as either utopia or dystopia. Overall, she seems to view AI as a beneficial partner to humans as we creep out of our bodies into the merged existence with AI that has already begun. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- More a book for Ovaltine than Quarantine : 12 Bytes ; How we got there and where might we go. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 29, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Tony Bayliss -- Feminist Polemic : Jeanette Winterson is incredibly knowledgeable and tackles a wide range of very topical issue in this collection of 'essays', and they contain a lot of good stuff. My guess is that the type of person who will read this book is likely to be fully-conversant with the history of Women's struggle, so really doesn't need to hear it all again. Her sub-titles should more accurately be 'How women got here, and where women might go next'. As a male with strong feminist sympathies, I nevertheless felt excluded. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from The BookBreather -- Clear, precise, incisive, jargon-free, infused with wisdom and love : May I start by applauding Winterson's thorough research and the deep thought and reflection she has applied to it. As a female who worked in AI and related areas for many years, I can attest that she gets her facts right, both the theory and the social side of things. But there is much in this book that goes beyond AI, and I learned a lot. As always, Winterson's writing is a work of art and a joy to read, though much of the content is disturbing, inevitably, as she surveys our tech- and resource-divided world. But there is optimism too - real and convincing hope - for a future that may yet contain the best of what we are. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 19, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from KEN LUNN -- Insightful : I read this book in a few hours, and no doubt will come back to it. There are many things to chew on, to reflect on. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 23, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Headintheclouds -- Intelligent take on what AI means : Thought provoking and very readable this book takes us on a journey through what AI means now and on what the future holds for it. This is from a woman's perspective showing how AI does not reflect the female image, or indeed the coloured image, in any good light. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 22, 2021 )

This book had a glowing review in the Spectator and I dashed off an order through Amazon. Ostensibly an outline of artificial intelligence in the context of modern electronic toys, it began promisingly with an enthusiastic outline of the works of Mary Shelley and Ada Lovelace. The approach Winterson takes in 12 Bytes: How We Got Here. Where We Might Go Next to questions of technology by drawing from a feminist perspective is exactly the kind of socio-critical analysis we need within the space today. Her research is extensive but not quite thorough and her characteristic writing style is brilliant. 12 Bytes; Share This. zoom download zoom download zoom download Grove Press. Grove Press.
